Water Safety Tips for Summer
Summer means more time spent at pools, lakes, splash pads, and around water — which makes water safety more important than ever for families with young children.
At The Swim School at Quantum, we believe water safety starts with awareness, preparation, and consistent supervision. While summer fun creates amazing memories, it’s also the perfect time to review important safety habits that help keep kids safe around water.
As both a swim instructor and a mom, I know how quickly distractions can happen during busy summer days. A few simple precautions can make a huge difference.
Always Supervise Children Around Water 👀
The most important water safety rule is active adult supervision.
Children should never be left unattended near water — even for a moment. Accidents can happen quickly and quietly, even in shallow water.
For younger swimmers:
✅ Stay within arm’s reach
✅ Avoid phone distractions
✅ Never assume someone else is watching
✅ Designate a “water watcher” during gatherings
Start Swim Lessons Early 🏊
Learning swim skills at a young age helps children become more comfortable and confident around water.
Swim lessons can help children learn:
-
Floating and recovery skills
-
Water confidence
-
Basic swim safety habits
-
How to safely enter and exit the pool
While no child is ever fully drown-proof, swim lessons add an important layer of protection.
Use Proper Safety Equipment 🛟
If children are not strong swimmers, use properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets around open water.
Floaties and inflatable toys should never replace supervision or life jackets.
Teach Pool Rules Early 🚫
Simple safety rules can help children build good habits around water:
-
No running near the pool
-
Always ask before entering water
-
No pushing or rough play
-
Stay away from drains and deep areas without supervision
Consistency helps children understand that water deserves respect.
Be Extra Careful Around Lakes & Open Water 🌊
Open water environments often have:
-
Strong currents
-
Uneven surfaces
-
Poor visibility
-
Sudden drop-offs
Even confident swimmers should always be supervised closely in lakes, rivers, and oceans.
Learn CPR ❤️
Parents and caregivers can benefit greatly from learning CPR and basic emergency response skills. In an emergency situation, quick action matters.
Keep Water Safety Positive
Water safety conversations don’t have to create fear. The goal is to help children feel confident, prepared, and respectful around water.
At The Swim School at Quantum, we believe safe swimmers are confident swimmers — and summer is the perfect time to build those skills.
Because the best summer memories are the safe ones. ☀️💦
