Why It’s Important to Swim With Your Face in the Water
At Quantum Athletics, one of the biggest milestones for young swimmers is learning to keep their face in the water. It might seem like a small detail, but it’s a huge step in becoming a confident and efficient swimmer! Here’s why it matters so much — and how we help kids get there comfortably.
1. Proper Body Position in the Water
When swimmers lift their heads to keep their faces out of the water, their hips and legs tend to sink. This makes it harder to move forward and can cause frustration or fatigue. Putting the face in helps the body stay flat and balanced — the ideal position for smooth, easy swimming!
2. Better Breathing and Rhythm
Swimming with your face in teaches proper breathing techniques. Instead of lifting their head (which interrupts movement), swimmers learn to turn their head to the side or blow bubbles underwater. This helps them find a natural rhythm and improves endurance over time.
3. Building Confidence and Comfort
For some kids, putting their face in the water can feel scary at first — and that’s okay! Learning to do it gradually builds comfort, confidence, and trust in the water. Once they realize the water isn’t so intimidating, everything else (kicking, floating, breathing) becomes easier.
4. Safer Swimming
Confidence in putting the face in the water is also a safety skill. If a child ever slips under unexpectedly, they’ll know how to react calmly instead of panicking. Comfortable swimmers are safer swimmers.
5. Stronger, Smoother Strokes
Whether it’s freestyle, backstroke, or butterfly, every efficient swim stroke starts with good body alignment — and that starts with the face in the water. Swimmers who master this early move faster, waste less energy, and enjoy swimming more!
At Quantum Athletics, we teach swimmers to feel at home in the water — one skill at a time.
Learning to swim with their face in the water helps kids build confidence, control, and strong technique that will last a lifetime. 🌊
